July 17-19, 2009, Dr. Ricketson traveled with 14 others from the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Canton, GA to Santiago, DR for a mission trip and Follower First Conference sponsored by the Oasis Christian Church of Santiago. Alvaro Rodriguese is the pastor.
Over 70 people participated in the confernce Monday through Thursday night as Dr. Ricketson shared how understanding the Follower First philosophy can make an impact in the church and the community. During the day, the mission team taught VBS for the children and in the afternoon shared the gospel door to door as well as through music and testimony. It was a profitable time.
The team also got to spend one day in Haiti and witness the depravity and poverty of a people steeped in need. The images seen during that one day will always burn in our hearts and minds.

May 28-31, 2009, Dr. Ricketson taught over 60 people present at Cristo Reina church in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The conference was live video streamed to others students in the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Montreal, Canada, and points within the United States.
The conferences was translated into Spanish and tapes of the proceedings will be available by the end of August.

It was a great time of teaching and fellowship at the first Follower First Conference. Those who attended responded very positively to the material and I expect they will be Follower-First Ambassadors to their churches.
Evaluations are coming in, but one change will be made for the next conference. It was agreed that the material would best be taught over a two day period. This way, participants would have the opportunity to better talk among themselves, have break-out sessions and better assimilate the information.
Look for another Follower-First Conference this Fall, 2009.

Conference Summary:
Everything does NOT rise or fall on leadership. Followers are just as responsible as leaders for what does or does not take place in the church.
In a day when being a leader and training leaders is all the rage, it may be time to look at leading the church from a different perspective. This is your opportunity to participate in a unique conference designed to question the assumptions currently held about leading, influencing others, and creating change within God’s uniquely designed church by implementing a Follower First philosophy of ministry.
Dr. Rusty Ricketson, Associate Professor of Leadership, Luther Rice University, will be presenting material and facilitating discussions regarding the biblical basis for a Follower First ministry, how leader-centered philosophies may actually hinder participation in the church, and the process by which a Follower First philosophy can be embedded within the church organizational culture.
The Bible is a book written by followers, about followers, for followers.
