When the Lord opened the opportunity to begin this ministry, the first name that came to mind was “Foundations of Faith”. It had a nice sound and rolled off the lips. However, after praying about the matter, I became convinced that the name was too broad. The Christian faith is not just one of many legitimate “faiths”. It is THE FAITH. It is faith in Jesus Christ and Him alone. Salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. As Jude 3 states: “I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.”
Thus, the name became “Foundations of the Faith” …until the day we were incorporating the ministry. This was the big day. The name had to be right. I had all the paper work done and had just sent the information by fax to the lawyers office to begin incorporation proceedings. It was then that a verse of scripture came to mind that changed everything. The verse was 1 Corinthians 3:11 “For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” The Bible is clear there are no “foundations” upon which we build our lives. Our lives, our hope, our faith are built upon one foundation and His name is Jesus Christ. I quickly called the lawyer’s office and had them change the name.
Later that evening my wife, Sharon, and I were talking and I was explaining all these changes to her. She pondered them for a while and then asked an insightful question. She said, “Let me get this straight. “The faith” is all about Jesus. And the “foundation” upon which we build our lives is Jesus. So does that mean that the name of this new ministry is really “JESUS”?” She was right. Jesus is the “Foundation of the Faith”.
The church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord
She is His new creation, by Spirit and the Word.
From heaven He came and sought her
To be His holy bride.
With His own blood He bought her
And for her life He died.
